Membership

  • The membership committee is working on a “New Member Mixer” to be held sometime in March.  Please bring a list of three “highly likely to join” prospects with you to the February 22nd meeting. Prizes will be awarded to those who comply.

Service Leadership Programs

  • Margie reported that the Northern High School Key Club is about to be dropped by international for non payment of dues.  The board met after the meeting and passed a motion to pay the 2009-2010 district and international dues to bring them current.  Patty Gentry volunteered to be the Northern High School Key Club liaison for our club.

Circle K

  • Minerva passed out information about the 9th Annual Bowl for Kid’s Sake Circle K Challenge which will be held on Monday, February 22, 2010 from 6:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. at Mardis Gras Bowling Center in Chapel Hill.  Please let me know if you would be interested in forming a team to help raise money for the Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Triangle and to help our very own Duke Circle K win $1,000 for raising the most money.

There was a moment of silence in remembrance of Linwood Tew.

Program

  • Margie discussed our website and Facebook page.
  • Margie presented an idea the Public Relations Committee developed call the AOK, Act Of Kindness award.  The club unanimously supported the project and we look forward to it rolling out soon.

Have a great week and I will see you on the 22nd!

Club January Service Project - Jan 22

TO: Kiwanis Club of Tobaccoland Membership
FROM: Barbara Baker
RE: Club January Service Project

GREAT NEWS! We get to put our January service hours where we put our money!

The January Service Project will take place on Friday, January 22 from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. at the John Avery Boys and Girls Club near downtown Durham (808 East Pettigrew Street). The Boys and Girls Club will not be open on our regular meeting day. Our project will be to assemble the pool tables for which we provided funding in December.

You will remember the pool tables are being placed at the John Avery Boys and Girls Club in memory of longtime KCT member and friend, Lewis Shipp. It will be good to share this very worthwhile community experience with you and maybe we can take some photos (Wendell?) to send to Lewis’ family.

It’s OK if you can not stay the entire time. If you only have an hour or so for lunch, bring a brown bag lunch that day and join us for as much time as you can spare. You can bring lunch if you can stay longer, too. I’ll provide soft drinks and water for everyone.

The children will start arriving at the Club at about 2:30, so we may get the chance to see some of them enjoying the products of our work. Won’t those be great pictures to send to Lewis’ family!

Meeting Notes - April 27th, Part 1

Good grief, my notes of this meeting are five pages long!  If we’re going to have meetings this exciting and productive, then someone is going to have to help write up the reports!

First, we welcomed guests: from the Chapel Hill Club ->  Doug Day (current Lt. Gov.), Clarence Whitefield (past Lt. Gov, and past KCT member), and Dick Poles (running for District Director).  We also had perspective member Cindy Valeir (okay - I don’t know how to spell her name - sorry Cindy), and finally Minerva Thai (past president of Duke Circle K) and George Hernandez (new Circle K president).  In other words… there was a LOT of leadership in the room!

Minerva spoke a few words to report on the Circle K work at NC Boys and Girls Home, then George reported on their project at Creekside Elementary School Festival and their end-of-year banquet.  One thing you can say about Duke Circle K — they sure do a lot of service work.  We are very proud of them.  Next week, after finals are over, they are off to Costa Rica to assist with a Peace Corp project and mentoring students in the schools.   We wish them good luck and good health.

Okay — that knocks out the first two pages of notes.   My kids are clamoring for dinner, so I will post again later.

Cheers, Margie

Join Circle-K: Boys & Girls Homes of Lake Waccamaw

Minerva Thai writes to say that Circle-K’s District Large-Scale Service Project is coming up. It is a weekend from March 20-22 spent at the Boys & Girls Homes of Lake Waccamaw.  She invites any KCT members to join Circle K in a weekend full of service! They will be renovating a cottage and helping with landscaping. Last semester they painted, renovated, landscaped, and did many other things. It will be a lot of a fun and is a great chance for hands-on service. Minerva will be talking more about it next Monday but the deadline is March 11 so she wanted to make sure that everyone knew ahead of time.
