Meeting Notes - Jan 19
This week Keith Burns, The 2009 Chair of the Durham Chamber of Commerce gave a terrific overview of how the chamber helps Durham businesses and promotes development. Keith is also an attorney with Morris, Manning, & Martin .
Banana pudding all ’round thanks to Joe. Happy Dollars included some happier Tarheels. Yea! Minerva Thai visited from Duke Circle-K.
We received a thank-you note from the Salvation Army. It reports that our bell ringing efforts raised $1033.59, which equates to 207 toys or 41 orders of holiday groceries. A great job done for very little effort!
Next week’s speaker is Seeds; Executive Director Lucy Harris.

Events & Meeting Notes - Dec 15
GOOD GRACIOUS!!! A lot happened last week. I don’t know where to start!
First, on Monday after the meeting we had another website/Facebook workshop. This one was attended by Bill Cole, Mary Lou Williams, Gordon, and Wendell. Bill learned how to write articles for this news blog (see the previous article), and Mary Lou set up a Facebook account. I can’t remember anymore what Gordon and Wendell were up to…. but they seemed to be having a good time.
Second, on Tuesday a contingent of Tobaccolanders went over to visit the Hillsborough Kiwanis Club. Bill Cole, Pat, Gordon, and Wendell attended; they had a great visit. Wendell’s photos are posted in our group on Facebook . If you can’t see Facebook, ask Wendell to email them to you. Kudos to Pat for organizing this event - building fellowship with our fellow Kiwanians.
Next on Friday, we were bell ringing for the Salvation Army at Sam’s Club (Southsquare). Brian, Barbara and Wendell took photos of that event, and they are terrific!! They are on Facebook now, but I will also get them posted on the website. Check back in a few days. It was a very successful event! We literally had the bucket full to the brim at the end of the day.
Finally, at our regular club meeting on Monday we had a great speaker, Ken Hermann, the Durham City Interim Finance Director. He gave a very informative, and entertaining, account of the city budget. We learned a lot about selling bonds, the tax base, non-profit status, and the distinction between "taxes" and "fees." Ken presented a clear picture of the various sources of city funding and how it is spent. Good stuff. Thanks for visiting with us Ken.
Also at the meeting, Beth gave special thanks to Wade for the House & Reception work that he has done this year - Way to go Wade!! The 2009 Program Schedule was distributed to let everyone know when they are responsible for meetings. Beth also informed us that Patty Gentry’s mother is in Hospice, so please reach out to Patty if you can.
Finally a reminder that we will have a meeting on Monday 12/29, though there will no program. There is a computer workshop following that meeting - call me for details.

The Durham Salvation Army Major spoke to us on the kettle-pot tradition, and how the money raised is used to help the people of Durham.
I spoke for a few minutes about the new members-only section to the website. No problem if you missed the talk, because I’m offering some hands-on workshops. The first one is this Saturday (6th) at my house. Call me if you are interested - 493-9393.
